My tip for today is a quick and frugal meal idea. Thursday, our nephew turned 16. I knew that we would be leaving to go visit for birthday cake shortly after hubby arrived home from work. I wanted to eat dinner before we left the house, but didn't want to make a big meal since time was short.
We did really well with finishing all the leftovers last week and all that was in there was a small bowl of spaghetti (enough for one) and a good sized bowl of meat sauce. Originally, my plan was to boil up some pasta real quick to use up the sauce, but I really didn't want to wait for the water to boil, etc. I spotted some hoagie rolls leftover from out Frugal Cheesesteak dinner the night before.
I remembered something I used to order from the local pizza place when I was a kid. It was a sandwich called a Gizmo. It was so long ago since I've last ordered a Gizmo. And I cannot remember if there was meat in the tomato sauce or not. But I made-do with what I had on hand.
Alison's Gizmo Sandwich
Ingredients:
- 2 hoagie rolls
- about 1 1/2 cups of meat sauce
- handful of shredded mozzarella cheese
Directions:
- preheat broiler
- heat meatsauce in microwave until heated through
- place sliced rolls in baking dish
- fill with desired amount of meatsauce
- sprinkle with mozzarella cheese
- pop under broiler until cheese is melted and rolls are toasty
I love how quick and easy these sandwiches were to make and I really loved the fact that I saved 2 rolls from the mold monster that lives in our house!
Each of us had one Gizmo and hubby ate the last of the pasta. I still have enough sauce left to use over pasta for a quick weekend lunch for the two of us.
***I will be sharing this make-do dinner idea with Shari from My Practically Perfect Life and her Make Do Monday blog carnival! ***
OHHHHHH............. I love this! I have never had a true Gizmo, but I love quick and easy and this sounds delish! Thanks for sharing and linking with Ann at Food on Fridays. I am hungry and it is lunchtime right now, so I am going to go in and make some of these. I will use bread, because that is what I have, but I have everything else waiting in the fridge. Thanks!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI would love it if you linked this Make-Do dinner on my Make-Do Mondays meme- unless you have something else in mind. Hope to see you there.

Shari, Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThat was my plan! haha! See you on Make-Do Monday!
By the way, let me know what you think of the Gizmo! I'm not sure if what I made was a "true Gizmo" either. Going by a long-ago memory and what I had in the fridge! haha!
Thanks for visiting my blog!
ReplyDeleteThis recipe sounds like something right up my husband's alley! I'm feeling a little hungry right now! Thanks for sharing!
Oh and re: your comment on my blog: That's why I wait a whole year to cash out from surveys...the money doesn't come in very quickly, but over an extended period of time it adds up if you stick with it. :) I took probably 20 surveys this week and only qualified for a few, and only made about $5 with those :o)
Thanks for sharing on Make-Do Mondays! Have a wonderful week.
