After Joe ended up in the ER last week (we were lucky, it turned out to be nothing serious), we decided that we're both going to start eating healthier.
We are polar opposites in our eating habits. The only thing in common is that neither of us are practicing healthy eating.
- Joe eats breakfast in the morning (if he has time) and doesn't eat anything for the rest of the day until dinner. He often works 12 hours or more a day after having nothing but a bowl of cereal or oatmeal to start his morning.
- Me? Well, I tend to just snack all day long. No real food. Just snacks. Crackers. Cookies. Chips. Whatever. All Day.
Okay, don't get me wrong... it's not all about pizza and french fries or chocolate and cake... we do buy and eat healthy foods. I just tend to reach for a cookie instead of a carrot! That's the big problem I need to address. Choosing healthier snacks.
Recently, yogurt has become one of my favorite healthy snacks. Let me start by saying that I am pretty picky when it comes to yogurt. As a child and most of my adult life, I've had "issues" with dairy products. Not health issues. I just didn't care for dairy products at all. Since I was always pretty finicky about dairy products, it's been an ongoing struggle to get enough calcium into my diet. We are so much alike! I am a BIG snacker too. One of the things that I had to overcome. I am super picky on yogurt too. My 2 favorite are the Thick and Creamy Key Lime and Orange. Yum! I take the One a Day Womens and started taking another calcium pill in the evenings as well. Calcium is better absorbed if spread out throughout the day.

ReplyDeleteSnack tips: Here is what I do. I spread my meals apart. This is a typical day for me.
ReplyDelete8 am - Light Bagel, egg whites, laughing cow cheese, 200 calories
10:30 - Yoplait yogurt, 100 calories
12:30 - leftovers or sandwich, 250 calories
1:30 - Salad, 100 calories
3:30 - apple or banana, 120 calories
5:30 - dinner, 350 calories
7:00 - popcorn, 100 calories
This is about 1200 calories. I make sure that my lunch is high protein and lots of veggies. Any bread is whole grain or high in fiber, I avoid crackers and white sugars as they won't fill me up. I eat TASTY food and for the most part, I am not hungry. It takes planning though. Leave nothing to chance or it won't work. It DOES get easier if you stick with it. I've been doing this for a few months and it's SOOOO much easier. It becomes habit, I promise, it really does. Stick with it and you WILL succeed and lose weight.
popcorn is a great snack. Get an air popper. You get a ton of food, eat it slowly and it fills you up. Drink lots of water and stay super hydrated too!! It WORKS!

I have trouble taking Calcium in the am because it conflicts with my medicine. I'm afraid that face (lack of dairy) is interfering with my vitamin D intaketoo. Yogurt is our favorite solution to that. It is sweet enough to feel like a you ate dessert. I sound like the commercial now I know, LOL. But its true!! I pack every lunch with a yogurt every day at my house. And if we are hungry before bed, its our favorite bedtime snack.

The best thing that has worked for me in losing weight is exercising and watching what I eat. I know it sounds simple, but it really works. I started out by walking about 30 minutes a day 3-4 times a week. Eventually, I built up to 45 mins to 60 minutes a day walking 5-6 days a week and I also do some form of strength training 2-3 times a week for about 30 minutes. I still eat what I want, but I watch my portion sizes.

I rarely drink milk. When I was pregnant, I could not even stand the thought of milk. It would make me so sick. It turned me off of milk. I know that if I drank more milk I would get more calicum.
